Here’s some useful software:
- Bazaar VCS
- A nice free/open source decentralised version control system produced by Canonical Ltd. and the community.
- Cygwin
- Provides to some degree a sort of ‘virtual Linux’ running under Windows. It’s not up to providing the complete interoperability that one would like but it helps if you’re running Windows but have to interact with Linux a lot.
- Debian
- The amazing community-created GNU/Linux distro.
- Fedora Core
- Another GNU/Linux distro.
- FileZilla
- Cool free/open source FTP client.
- Gentoo
- The name of this GNU/Linux distro refers to the install process: generate too much coffee before you start, or you may not finish.
- GIMP — the GNU Image Manipulation Program
- The GNU Project
- One of the halves of GNU/Linux. Many of the best Free Software goodies originate here!
- The Linux Kernel Archives
- The other half. Does anyone really need to be told about this these days? ;-)
- mozilla.org
- Home of the excellent Firefox web browser and Thunderbird email client.
- NOD32
- Top-class antivirus software.
- GNU Octave
- A free/open source numerical computing package similar to the proprietary MATLAB.
- OpenOffice.org
- High-quality free/open-source office suite.
- openSUSE
- Yet another GNU/Linux distro.
- Opera
- Another excellent web browser.
- PuTTY
- Free/open source telnet/ssh client for Windows and Unix.
- The R Project for Statistical Computing
- rpm.pbone.net
- RPM search facility (covers most distros).
- Skype
- Internet telephone fun.
- TextPad
- Great text-editing software for Windows.
- Ubuntu Linux
- A GNU/Linux distro that shares the love and humanity.
- WinSCP
- Free/open source Windows SCP transfer client.
